PRODUCT REGISTRATION UNDER FSSAI - KNOWHOW & CHALLENGES

The recently concluded Conference by INDIAN DRUG MANFACTURERS ASSOCIATION-NUTRACEUTICAL SUB COMMITTEE ON ' PRODUCT REGISTRATION UNDER FSSAI: KNOWHOW & CHALLENGES' 10th-11th May 2013 at MCA Club, BKC, Mumbai was a roaring success addressing the various challenges faced by the Nutraceutical Industry under the able leadership of Chairman-Dr. R.K.Sanghavi, Committee Members & IDMA Secretariat.

Myself as one of the Committee Member/Nutraceutical Manufacturer was given an opportunity among other eminent speakers to make an presentation on the subject " TUMULTUOUS TRANSITION FROM PFA TO FSSAI REGIME" which was practically addressed & very well accepted by the audience( Industry) and Authorities present.Our Sincere Thanks to the Industry at first , The Committee Members Dr. R.K.Sanghavi (Chairman), Mr.Sandeep Gupta ( Vice Chairman), Mr.Subramanium vaidya, Mrs.Priti Mohile, Mr. R.S.Gadgil, Dr. Sumedh Gaikwad Mr. Meelap Heroo.

First day Inauguration was done by Mr. Mahesh Zagade - Commisioner Food & Drug Administration was very positive and optimistic to help the Industry with their challenges by taking up the issues with the Central Authority in his inaugural speech. The Conferance was also attended by Mr. Ais Kumar Designated Officer Western Region FSSAI, Mr.Krishna Murari Technical officer FSSAI Mumbai, Dr. K.Madhavan Nair-Scientist-National Institute of Nutrition ( Hyderabad), Dr. Ashok Vaidya Scientific Committee Member FSSAI.

The seminar ended with an hope that the Industry facing the challenges will be well addressed to the FSSAI Central Authority resolving the various issues by the IDMA-Nutraceutical Sub Committee as addressed by Dr. R.K.Sanghavi in his Summing up speech, with a well said VOTE OF THANKS by Mr. Subramanium Vaidya.

Nutraceutical Subcommittee of IDMA - Product Registration under FSSAI

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been established under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which consolidates various acts & orders that have hitherto handled food related issues in various Ministries and Departments. FSSAI has been created for laying down science-based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

However, curiously the same FSSAI has also been imposed on nutraceuticals! From day one it was pointed out by many (with a fair knowledge of Indian nutra industry) that changing PFA to FSSAI will be besieged with nothing but insurmountable problems and hindrances to their manufacturing & marketing activities thereby adversely impacting consumers. The confusion-ridden awareness of nutraceuticals has resulted in the prevailing disturbed scenario.

This conference has been designed to understand the FSSAI act in-depth, its impact and how to successfully adapt the same. Importantly, in this seminar, your voice is
intended to be heard and noted.

Healthy diet with supplements can keep you out of depression

DEPRESSION

We often use the expression “ I feel depressed” when we feel sad or miserable about life, this is temporary feeling which passes in due course. But repetition of depressed feeling continuously for weeks or recurrence of depressed feeling repeatedly indicates medical illness and needs treatment.

It is not sure what causes depression; according to some experts “Depression” is caused by a combination of factors such as person’s genes, his biochemical environment, his personal experience and psychological factors.

Depression is not necessarily a psychological disorder. Depressed people may feel sad, anxious, empty, hopeless, worried, helpless, worthless, guilty, irritable or restless.

They may lose interest in activities that once were pleasurable, experience loss of appetite or overeating, have problems concentrating, remembering details or making decision and may contemplate or attempt suicide.

Some of the causes for depressed mood include menopause, financial difficulties, job or business problems, relationship troubles, separation, suffering from major life threatening illnesses.

Psychotic depression
Postpartum depression
Seasonal affective disorders
Bipolar disorder

In my opinion apart from medicinal treatment one can help himself to come out of the depressed state. The first step forward is “ACCEPTANCE” of facts and happenings with and around your life. Upon “ACCEPTANCE” one can make a conscious effort to break the hold that the depression has on you and can decide to help yourself. Helps to recognize the pattern of negative thinking and replace it with positive thinking/ constructive activity and will took for the things to do that occupy your mind.

Proper healthy diet with supplements of Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 and regular exercises (especially in the morning) can be very effective in lifting your mood and increasing your energy levels. Regular exercise / physical activity stimulate chemicals in brain called endorphins, which can help you to feel better.
